The biggest mistake people make is trying to squeeze all of their prep into the same day as their appointment.
For the smoothest, longest-lasting tan, your skin should already be clean, exfoliated, and freshly shaved the day before you arrive.
Here's the schedule I recommend for weekend events.
Wednesday: Prep Day
This is the day to get your skin completely ready.
✔ Take a shower
✔ Exfoliate your entire body
✔ Shave or wax (if needed)
✔ Get your manicure and pedicure
✔ Schedule eyebrow waxing or other facial waxing
By doing all of this the day before your spray tan, your skin has time to calm down, and your spray tan will develop much more evenly.
Thursday Evening: Spray Tan Day
Thursday evening is my favorite time to spray clients who have weekend events.
After your appointment, you'll head home and let your tan develop.
During this time, you'll notice you're much darker than your final color—and that's completely normal!
The instant color you see comes from the cosmetic bronzer in the spray tan solution. It helps guide the application and gives you immediate color, but it washes away during your first rinse.
I like to tell clients this is the perfect excuse to stay home, relax, watch a movie, and let your tan "marinate."
Ideally, you'll leave the solution on for at least 3 hours, or longer if your solution allows.

How to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer
Once your tan has developed, the goal is to protect the outer layer of skin where your color lives.
Here are my biggest aftercare tips:
Moisturize your skin twice a day to keep it hydrated.
Drink plenty of water—healthy, hydrated skin holds a tan longer.
Avoid exfoliating until you're ready for your tan to fade.
Skip shaving whenever possible, since shaving removes the dead skin cells that contain your color.
Avoid long hot baths, hot tubs, chlorinated pools, and extended swimming, which can cause your tan to fade more quickly.
Pat your skin dry after showering instead of rubbing aggressively with a towel.
Treat your tan gently, and you'll enjoy several extra days of beautiful color.
